HS football: Week 2

Posted

Thursday is normally a big preparation day for high school football teams, but this week they're playing for keeps with all games moved from Saturday due to Rosh Hashanah.

The marquee matchup is Baldwin at Freeport in Conference I at 4 p.m. The teams combine to score 89 points on opening week, with the Bruins beating Port Washington 41-6 and the defending champion Red Devils outlasting surprising Oceanside, 48-42. The Sailors get Port Washington under the lights at 7:30 p.m. The game to catch in Conference II is Carey at Wantagh at 4:15 p.m., while the Conference III slate offers Lynbrook at Lawrence, Westbury at South Side, and Hewlett at Sewanhaka at 4:15 p.m. South Side pulled the county's biggest upset in Week 1, knocking off defending champion Bethpage, 13-6, in overtime in Paul Mastronardi's first game as head coach. In Conference IV, Clarke hits the road to face two-time defending champion Seaford at 7 p.m.
