"We didn't know people like you existed."

Those were the words of the wife of a wounded U.S. Army major who attended the Lynbrook Fire Department's ninth annual Concert for Wounded Warriors on Sept. 21 at Greis Park.

"Seven wounded soldiers, six males and one female, presently receiving treatment from war wounds at the rehabilitation unit at Fort Belvoir, Va., along with their families, traveled to Lynbrook to attend the concert and meet firefighters who care,” Lynbrook Fire Chief Nick Pearsall said.

Hundreds of Lynbrook residents, their friends, and firefighters from surrounding communities came out to support the village’s continued effort to help wounded warriors. About 600 adults came to the event, and roughly 100 children were also in attendance.

The festivities began early in the afternoon with the LFD's second annual Motorcycle Run for Wounded Warriors. Participants rode from Greis Park to Captree State Park with the warriors following in an LFD van.  When the riders returned, the concert began at 4 p.m., featuring performances by Euphoria, Thorogood Jenkins Live and a young teenage group, New York Times. Each band donated their time to entertain the large crowd.

More than 150 raffles and JetBlue tickets were given away thanks to the generosity of many businesses and corporations. Many companies also donated the food, which was made and served by the department's Ladies Auxiliary. The Holiday Inn Express also housed the soldiers and their families while they were in the village for the weekend.

Funds raised supported Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, a nonprofit that was formed in Nassau County in 2004. The firefighters are not associated with the Wounded Warrior Project.

Residents that could not attend, but wish to make a contribution can mail a check to Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, P.O. Box 295, Garden City, N.Y. 11530.

"We are overwhelmed by all of the support," the warriors wife said when she saw the crowd of people that came out to help them and other wounded servicemen and women.
