Isles bring smiles to NUMC patients

Weight, Wisniewski, MacDonald visit children at East Meadow hospital

Only a few hours after flying in from a game in Nashville, three players from the New York Islanders brought some holiday cheer to children in East Meadow at the Nassau University Medical Center’s pediatric unit on Tuesday afternoon.

The visit to the NUMC was one of eight Islanders’ visits to young patients at hospitals and health facilities on Long Island. Their appearances capped off a holiday shopping spree program sponsored by EmblemHealth. On Dec. 7, several Islanders players picked out toys for the children in a shopping spree at the Toys ‘R’ Us in Carle Place.

Captain Doug Weight, and defensemen Andrew MacDonald and James Wisniewski played the role of Santa at the NUMC on Tuesday, as they hand-delivered toys to the children.

“We consider ourselves privileged to put some smiles on some kids’ faces,” MacDonald said. “We’re making their day. It’s really good for us too. It puts smiles on our faces.”

Weight, MacDonald and Wisniewski toured the pediatric floor while rolling a bin filled with toys.

Saikou Snuggs, a patient from West Hempstead, proudly showed the new mp3 player that Weight helped him pick out.

“It was great,” Saikou said. “I’ve seen them at the stadium but I’ve never met them before.”
