John F. “Jack” Callow, formerly of Valley Stream, died on Feb. 13 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, N.Y. It was the eve of the 77th anniversary of his first date with his wife, Madeleine. Callow was 95.

He was born to Margaret and Anthony Callow on Aug. 17, 1914, in Queens. Following the death of his mother in 1918, he was raised by Ella O’Keefe Callow.

Callow served on the Naval destroyer USS Halsey Powell in World War II. After retiring from his career as a salesman, Callow and his wife moved to Dunedin, Fla. He was a church usher and served for 10 years as president of the 444 Social Club. Callow enjoyed to fish and crab, play bocce and cards, and coordinate social activities and outings. In 2003, he and his wife moved to Newburgh to be closer to their family.

Survivors include his son John and wife Nancy of Valley Stream; daughter Barbara Okamoto and husband Peter of San Francisco; daughter Janit Maguire and husband Tom of Newburgh; sister Dorothy LaChance and husband Ed of Plainview; grandson Harrison Okamoto of San Francisco; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Madeleine, of 70 years, and sisters Marguerite Harrington and Virginia Conklin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 18.
