Kudos, Valley Stream, for fighting FEMA

To the Editor:

I read with interest how Sen. Charles Schumer’s Federal Emergency Management Agency bill passed Congress on June 29. This is a great victory for the Valley Stream community. Senator Schumer should be loudly applauded for his efforts on our behalf.

More importantly, the Valley Stream community should be applauded, for this victory is really theirs. When this problem first reared its ugly head, residents like Carol Crupi, Joe Margolin and others brought their concerns to Mayor Ed Cahill, who immediately enlisted the help of his fellow elected officials. At his request, I organized a FEMA meeting at Village Hall and the community rallied in strength. Indeed, it came out in such strength that I had to organize a second meeting at Valley Stream Central High School, where hundreds of Valley Stream residents gathered to have their voices heard.

And they were heard loudly and clearly!

Senator Schumer and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, realizing that this was a federal problem needing federal relief, jumped into the fray and in a relatively short period of time have seemingly gotten the relief that our community clearly needed and loudly demanded.

Congratulations to the Valley Stream community for a job well done!
