Library display goes up brick-by-brick

It’s that time of year again. The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library is once again holding its annual Lego exhibition for children, with numerous creations on display in the library’s main room throughout January.

This is the 14th year the library has held the exhibition. With 29 entries, two display cases were needed to hold all of the projects.

Library Director Mamie Eng said she was pleased with the level of excitement for this year’s display. “There was a lot more interest, a lot of new kids,” she said. “Of course, we have our regulars.”

Here are some of the children participating this year:

Kiernan Morgan, 9
School: Fourth-grader at James A. Dever, District 13
Project: “Airport Terminal”
About his project: Built from a set he got for Christmas. The airport building has seats and spinning doors. There is also an air traffic control tower and luggage truck. Hopes people will say “wow” when the see it.

Favorite Lego color: Red

Bryon Phillip, 9
School: Fourth-grader at Valley Stream Christian Academy
Project: “Plane Rocket 6000”
About his project: It can be used to travel through space, or by the military. “This is something that they’ll use in the future,” he said. Bryon said he created the person at the Lego store and the plane pieces came from various sets.

Eric Nelson, 11
School: Sixth-grader at Robert W. Carbonaro, District 24
Project: “Bullseye the Dog”
About his project: Look familiar? It’s the Target dog. It came with a gift card that he got for Christmas, so he built it and submitted it for the display. “I just thought people would like it because a lot of people know about the dog,” he said, “but I don’t know if a lot of people have seen this Lego set.” Took about 10 minutes to build.

Favorite Lego color: He likes them all

Robert Callahan, 8
School: Third-grader at Saw Mill Road, North Bellmore
Project: “Lego Face”
About his project: Built a face out of red, yellow and blue Legos. The red part at the top is a hat. “This took me a while to build,” he said. “It took me about an hour.”
Participating in display: First time. Grandmother, who lives in Valley Stream, took him and his brother to the display last year.

Brandon Catanzaro
Age: 9
School: Fourth-grader at Robert W. Carbonaro, District 24
Project: “Bosk’s Crimson Fighter”
About his project: It’s a space ship, Brandon’s favorite thing to build. It has a satellite, moveable cannons, a torpedo, rocket launcher, two cockpits and bumpers on the side. Took about an hour to build using Legos from three different sets.
Participating in display: Fourth time
Favorite Lego type: Star Wars, Batman and Knight’s Kingdom sets

Nicole Nelson, 9
School: Third-grader at Robert W. Carbonaro, District 24
Project: “Robot Time”
About her project: Wanted to make a robot, which took her about 20 minutes to build. “I just built it out of my own Legos,” she said. “I worked hard on it.”

Patrick Morgan, 11
School: Sixth-grader at James A. Dever, District 13
Project: “Summer Getaway”
About his project: Built it from a Lego set he got for his birthday last year. It’s a summer house with a picnic table, barbecue and flowers. Took about two hours to build. “This is my first Lego thing I ever built,” he said, adding that he has built many more Lego creations since then.

Ryan Callahan, 12
School: Sixth-grader at Lutheran High School, Brookville
Project:
“Spy Car”
About his project: The window over the driver’s seat opens up so he can put a person inside. Ryan said this is the first car creation that he is proud of, and it took about a half-hour to build. “I’m not good at making cars,” he said. “Surprisingly, it came out better than I expected.”
Participating in display: First time. Grandmother, who lives in Valley Stream, took him and his brother to the display last year.
