LIPA statement on Tuesday afternoon

Storm Update: October 30

Hurricane Sandy has been an unprecedented disaster in the Northeast, with millions of people without power. The damage caused to the island’s electric system has been devastating, causing power outages to more than 900,000 customers.

LIPA restoration crews are out in force and we will not rest until every single customer has power. We have begun the enormous task of assessing the extent of the damage and we will continue to update you as we make progress. Numerous areas remain inaccessible due to flooding and debris on roadways. We are coordinating with government officials at all levels, particularly on clearing roads for emergency responders, as well as our crews.

While much of our restoration plan at this early stage involves assessing damage, crews will also be restoring power today and every day until all power is restored. It is critically important that we make sure hospitals, other critical facilities, and emergency services are up and running.

Restoring power to the entire island will require assistance from off the island. We have already brought in an additional workforce. The enormity of this storm has strained the resources of utilities in its path. This limits the number of additional restoration crews available to assist us in getting the power back on. Over the next few days, we will know more about our access to those resources.

Fallen trees and power lines remain a hazard across the entire island. Please remain focused on safety, for you and your loved ones:

Stay away from ANY downed wire and report it to LIPA immediately, anytime at 1-800-490-0075.

Electric wires that are entangled in debris may not be visible.

Telephone and Cable TV wires and even standing water can become electrified when in contact with electric wires.

A fallen tree can be a tempting playground for children. Please keep children away from all storm debris.

Don't pile storm debris in the streets or near utility poles to keep them clear for repair crews and other emergency responders.

If you have lost power, unplug appliances and other electronics as protection from power surges.

Power is important, but nothing is more important than your safety.

LIPA works for you 24/7 all year and that will not change now. After making sure you are safe, our number one priority is to get the power back on. We will continue to update you about our progress.
