Blues-themed art and photography show

The 2nd annual Barrier Beach Blues and Arts Festival reminds artists and photographers to in the Juried Blues-themed show at the Long Beach Public Library later this month.

The three “blues”-themed categories include: Blues as color, blues as mood/emotion and blues as music. All work must be framed, labeled, wired and ready for hanging or it will not be accepted. Submissions meeting all criteria will be accepted on June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Long Beach Library Gallery.

An artists’ reception is scheduled for June 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be followed up with an evening of "Jook Joint Blues" dancing with Devona Cartier, Joshua Boroff and DJ Hether Samuels from 7 to 8 p.m. and Live Blues Music with the 405 Blues Band. This year’s Blues and Arts festival is inspired by the sights and sounds of the Mississippi Delta. Performances will take place at the Long Beach Public Library from June 24 to 26 as well as post-performance events at Lola’s and Monterey’s restaurants.

The Barrier Beach Blues and Arts Festival, to be held from June 24 to 27 in Long Beach, is seeking volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities including: art show and reception coordination, raffle coordinators, membership and event Reception, and publicity and promotion. Nickerson Beach offers recreation program

The Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums has initiated a new Summer Recreation Program designed for children ages five to 12 (separated into four appropriate age groups) and is operating in four parks, including Nickerson Beach Park, at 880 Lido Boulevard. The program runs from July 6 through Aug. 12 and the cost is $450 for the first child, $400 for a second child and $350 for a third child (maximum of $1,200 per family). You must be a Nassau County resident for your child to be eligible. Parents have until June 15 to register and can take advantage of a one-day registration at Nickerson Beach Park on June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. For information call 516-572-0231 or visit www.nassaucounty
