Detective Michael Meehan was named "Cop of the Month" for June by the Rockville Centre Police Department for alert police work that led to the arrest of a suspect for an armed robbery in Oceanside.

Detective Meehan, responding to a Nassau County Police transmission at about 1 p.m. on June 3, stopped a vehicle on North Long Beach Road that matched the description of one that had been used in a robbery moments before.

During the robbery, a man entered the Dairy Barn on Oceanside Road, used a knife to threaten an employee and took $125 from a cash register before fleeing northbound on Oceanside Road.

During the stop, Detective Meehan observed the subject throwing something under the front passenger seat. Upon searching, he recovered a knife and a baseball cap matching those used in the robbery. A short time later, the victim positively identified the subject.

The suspect was arrested for first degree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

In naming him Cop of the Month for June, Police Commissioner Charles Gennario praised Detective Meehan for his "diligence, dedication to duty and highly professional conduct" in apprehending the suspect.
