The Hempstead Zoning Board of Appeals meet on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Nathan Bennett Pavilion, One Washington St., Hempstead.


School board meetings.


The Elmont School District Board of Education meet on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. at the administrative office building, 135 Elmont Rd. in Elmont.


The Franklin Square School District Board of Education meet on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Washington Street School, 760 Washington St. in Franklin Square.


The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education meet on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School, 77 Landau Ave. in Floral Park.


Chamber meetings.


The Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce will meet on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Carmela's Restaurant, 910 Hempstead Tpke. Chamber members will discuss what can be done to attract consumers to local businesses, how to make the town more attractive to consumers and what local elected officials can do to help the chamber accomplish its goals.


In addition, Sergeant Edward Grimm, director of the Fifth Precinct's Problem Oriented Policing (POP) unit, will be the gusest speaker. The cost of dinner is $20 with a separate cash bar.

Feis and Irish festival


The Nassau County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold the the 33rd Annual Feis and Irish festival at Hempstead Harbor Beach Park on West Shore Road, Port Washington, beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.


The day includes competitions in solo Irish dancing, amateur and championship figure dancing, adult Irish dancing, solo piping and drumming, pipe bands, Irish traditional singing, Irish soda bread, Irish art, Irish language, Irish music and Irish games. Special attractions include massed Irish pipe bands, Irish entertainment, storytelling and vendors. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Picnic facilities available. Admission fee: $10.


Plattduetsche Oktoberfest


The New Generation German-American Club, a not for profit organization, will hold its 12th Annual Oktoberfest on Friday, Oct. 7 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant, 1132 Hempstead Tpke. in Franklin Square. Oktoberfest features a German buffet dinner, unlimited German beer, wine and soda, raffle prizes, and music by the Kapelle Fellas, with traditional dancing by the Original Enzian and D'Heimats Gruppe. Town bazaar in October


Each autumn, members of the Town of Hempstead's senior centers and clubs display a variety of items made by the seniors themselves, including hand-knit and hand-sewn products, crafts and baked goods at bazaars throughout the township. The bazaar comes to the Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Pl., on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and to the Elmont Senior Center, 138 Elmont Rd., on Friday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free flu shots for seniors


The Franklin Square Elementary School District offers free flu immunizations for District senior citizens from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Washington Street School. In-person registration will be held at the school, 760 Washington St. in Franklin Square, on Tuesday, Sept. 27, Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Special Needs Training


Special Needs Training Wheels is a Jewish Family Education Program for children with special needs and their families. Designed for young children with learning disabilities to succeed in a social setting, the program helps families learn about Jewish traditions through the use of arts and crafts, story telling and song.


Located in East Meadow, Oceanside and Plainview, every class is run by qualified instructors to teach many important social and school skills for children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old. It also enables parents to meet once a month and form support systems.

Torah Study Seminar


The Elmont Jewish Center, 500 Elmont Rd. in Elmont, presents a Torah study seminar on Saturday, Sept. 17 at noon. The group will study chapter, verse and commentary of the Torah. No previous study or experience required.


Newsman talks ethics


TV news correspondent Joseph Dembo will host the first program of the Elmont Jewish Center's fall lecture series "Ethics in Broadcast Journalism." Dembo, a veteran of both CBS and NBC news casts, will bring an insider's view of the ethics of his profession on Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Jewish Center, 500 Elmont Rd. in Elmont.


St. Boniface Church


is holding an autumn craft fair on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair is open to all fine artists and/or crafts persons who design, produce and/or sell original work. For a $45 fee, vendors will be provided with a 12' X 10' space. Vendor must provide all display material. Limited number of tables are available for $10 and limited spaces with electricity. St. Catherine of Sienna's mixed bowling league is looking for bowlers to join in September. Roll with the JCC
