John Mikulin has a chance at continuing his leadership in the New York State Assembly’s 17th District after winning the Republican primary last night over challenger James Coll, 45, of Seaford.

With 109 precincts counted, Mikulin had 2,414 votes, or 70 percent, and Coll had 1,048 votes, or 30 percent.

Mikulin, 30, of Levittown, won the April 24 special election for the seat with 63 percent of the vote. Prior to serving the district, Mikulin was the president of the Island Trees Public Library’s board of trustees and a deputy Town of Hempstead attorney.

At a candidate’s forum prior to the election, Mikulin made clear his goal to oppose the Democrats in the Assembly and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who won the gubernatorial primary with 65.6 percent of the vote.

“Governor Cuomo and Assembly Democrats do not care about Long Island,” Mikulin said. “I’m here. I’m fighting for Long Island.”

In the general election this November, Mikulin will go up against Democrat Kimberly Snow, who did not face a primary challenge.

The district includes East Meadow, Seaford, Wantagh, Bethpage, Farmingdale, Levittown, Massapequa and Uniondale.
