Mormile Florists, a village landmark at 443 North Long Beach Road, on the corner of Hamilton Road, is heading south. The venerable family business will relocate to 239 North Long Beach Road, 10 blocks toward Sunrise Highway, where it will share space with another long established family-owned business, G.B. Schenone Nursery.

Owned and operated for 60 years by his family, Bill Kakis, the current owner of Mormile, said the flower shop, which had been renovated 10 years ago, and the house next to it, at the corner of Brevoort Place and North Long Beach Road, which had been owned by his aunt, Anna Kakis, is being sold to Jim Lucas, a local builder/contractor of residential properties, who will build three new houses on the two properties.

According to Rich McQuillan, the owner of Links Real Estate Group who is brokering the deal, two of the new homes will face Breevort, the other will face Hamilton Road. Each of the new high-end colonial homes will have approximately 3,200 square feet, four bedrooms and two and a half baths. They will be priced at $949,000. The village has approved the plans and issued all the permits, McQuillan said, and groundbreaking is expected to take place in mid-October.

Kakis said that “God willing, we’ll be [at the new location] by Columbus Day.” He said Robert Schenone will continue to operate his nursery and landscape design business out of the rear of the property, while Mormile will take over the now-vacant retail space in the front of the building, as well as the property’s side area.

With the move, Kakis said Mormile Florists will be able to offer more outdoor and seasonal items, plants, smaller shrubs, Christmas trees and things like firewood and possibly propane. He said there are plans for a ribbon cutting, cocktail party and open house soon after the move takes place.

“It shows positive signs in challenging economic times,” said McQuillin, of the real estate deal and development, adding that Lucas is currently building a similar home on the corner of Raymond Street and Morris Avenue. “I think this is encouraging for the Rockville Centre market,” he said.
