New venue for Truck Day

Posted

Truck Day is an annual tradition for Valley Stream’s nursery school students to come out and check out the rigs they typically only get to play with in toy size.

This year was a bit different. With the normal venue, the Hendrickson Pool parking lot, closed for construction, the event was relocated to the Village Green. Village trucks filled out the blacktop area in front of the bandshell and the surrounding lawn. There was a dump truck, tractor, tree trimming truck, ambulance and several fire trucks.

Despite the scaled down event, children still “oohed” and “aahed” over the large trucks. Many took their time in the driver’s seat, getting a look at the controls and honking the horns. Some even sat in the truck tires, which were taller than many of the kids.

Village workers and volunteer firefighters told the children how each truck works and showed them some of the equipment on board.

About 150 children from Grace United Methodist Nursery school came down with their parents. Diane Panzarino, director of the nursery school, was pleased with the new location. “It’s intimate,” she said. “I like it.”
