To commemorate its 50th reunion, the Valley Stream North High School Class of 1968 raised more than $4,000 to purchase door alarms and rechargeable blow horns to enhance the high school’s security.

The check was part of the class’ Keeping Schools Safe, or KiSS, initiative that was developed after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla. in February.

“It is a community that suffers at the hand of tragedy, but families, alumni and businesses can pull together and help safeguard those who are in school buildings every day,” said Sheila Brayman Borgese, the chair of the planning committee. “We hope to be a role model for communities and alumni across Long Island.”

She and two other representatives from the class presented North High School Principal Rachel Green with a check for $4,177.06 at a Board of Education meeting on Sept. 4.

“On behalf of the entire North High community, we are extremely appreciative of the generosity and thoughtfulness of the Class of ’68,” Green said in a statement.

A formal check presentation will be held on Sept. 22 at the class’ reunion.
