Oceanside Middle School and Nike work together to recycle shoes

This year, the Oceanside Middle School and the PTA worked with the Nike Factory Store in the Sands Shopping Center in Oceanside to carry out a recycling initiative. For every pair of old sneakers students brought in over the last three months, the student received a ticket that they brought to school to be collected.

By the end of the project, the students had recycled 450 pairs of sneakers, with the three top earners receiving a Nike gift card donated by the PTA. The top earner, Jenna Cavale, recycled 97 pairs of sneakers.  The second place earner, Mia Restrepo, recycled 58 pairs of sneakers.  The third place earner, Katherine Roughan, recycled 50 pairs of sneakers.

The recycling initiative culminated in an Earth Day celebration at the Nike Factory store on April 22, Earth Day. The store opened it’s doors early for OMS students and families to shop and celebrate with a special “bounce back” coupon donated by Nike in appreciation of the students efforts.
