Oceanside spirit across the pond

Varsity cheerleaders Kerry Flavin, 16, and Cassidy Phillips, 15 will get to take their spirit across the pond. The Oceanside High School juniors will be performing at the London New Year’s Day Parade with hundreds of other cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S.

“It’s really exciting, said Phillips, who has been cheerleading since she was six years old. “Because we get to train with all different people.”

The parade performance is a special event from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) All-American team. Both Flavin and Phillips were chosen for the All-American team from UCA’s summer cheerleading camp.

“We get to share our passion,” said Flavin. “For me, cheerleading is one of my favorite things to do.”

The cheerleaders will be in London from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2. In addition to the rehearsing for the parade performance, the Flavin and Phillips plan on sightseeing — they will get to visit a castle — and attending shows.

UCA high school seniors can be in the Macy’s Day Parade — which is Flavin and Phillips’ goal for next year. “We want to spread the word that cheerleading is a sport,” said Phillips. “And that we want to be taken seriously. It’s so hard and it takes a lot of courage.”
