Oceanside resident Gloria Berkowitz was chosen as one of 12 winners of the Town of Hempstead 19th Annual Calendar Photo Contest. Her picture, a landscape, will be a feature in the 2017 complimentary town calendar.

The contest was open only to residents of the town, and had to depict a scene from the someplace in the town.

“The picture was taken in Bay Park in East Rockaway in November of 2014,” Berkowitz said, “You have to be in the right place at the right time. Some people have hundreds of dollars of camera equipment, I have an inexpensive camera, but I like the outdoors and I take a lot of pictures, I like sunsets.”

Berkowitz said “I believe sunrise is God’s promise and sunset is his signature for another day, that’s how I look at it.”

This is the first time Berkowitz has entered a contest, but she plans on taking more pictures and entering again next year.

“This picture will be in the Town’s calendar in November. Not the big picture, a little one, but it will be there,” Berkowitz said.

Berkowitz also takes pictures of birds. “Birding is my hobby. I am a member of the South Shore Audubon Society, and I like to go to the Oceanside Marine Preserve. I will take a picture of a green heron or a great blue heron or egret, you never know if you will see something good and you then you don’t have your camera with you. I like the outdoors, I like nature, most people just drive by in cars.”
