East Rockaway Village-Clerk Treasurer Doris Piedimonte was one of six residents who were honored for their contributions to the Hispanic community, their neighborhoods and the Town of Hempstead.

Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead Town Board presented the awards in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month during a special ceremony at Hempstead Town Hall last week.

“The Hispanic Heritage Month committee selected six outstanding honorees who have made significant contributions to their communities and have been role models for others,” Murray said.

A native of Colombia, Piedimonte came to New York in 1999. She volunteered at South Side High School in Rockville Centre, helping Spanish-speaking children and their parents to communicate with classmates and teachers. She became a teacher’s assistant, and made the decision to stay on Long Island.

Educated in Colombia, Piedimonte holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Colombia, and a Master’s Degree in Business Law from the University of Medellin. She worked for the National Federation of Commerce, a large real estate and building administration firm in Columbia, as well as the prestigious Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital. She eventually put that managerial experience to work on Long Island as an administrative officer in the nursing department at Nassau University Medical Center. During that time, Piedimont took courses at Molloy College to improve her computer and English skills.

In January 2003, Piedimonte was appointed as Deputy Clerk-Comptroller for the Incorporated Village of East Rockaway, a position she held for eight and a half years, until April 2011, when she was appointed as the Village Clerk-Treasurer. Doris is one of only a few Hispanic village clerks on Long Island, and said that she is both humbled and honored by this appointment.Piedimonte plans to pursue a Master’s Degree Program for village clerks and become accredited as an International Municipal Clerk. She is married and resides in Valley Stream with her husband, Jim.
