Re-elect Carrie Solages in 3rd L.D.

Posted

Incumbent Carrie Solages is a visible legislator for the 3rd District, appearing at community events, hosting tax workshops and working with residents to address their concerns. He deserves to be re-elected.

Solages was integral in the push for the reopening of the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct in Elmont, and was a vocal advocate for the removal of the county’s school speed zone cameras when their outsized impact drew the ire of residents already burdened by high taxes, and questions were raised about the motivation behind the program.

Solages reflects the concerns of many of his constituents, including several organized community groups, in the debate over the proposed Cosmos soccer stadium. Giving a voice to such concerns is a fundamental responsibility of a county representative.

His legal knowledge and positions on issues like county contracts and economic development show a solid grasp of the factors at play, and he displays a reasoned approach to these subjects.

Solages recognizes the evolving needs of the district, with affordable housing and smart economic growth at the top of the list. He is also sensitive to the issues facing his district’s minority populations. His experience as the county’s human rights commissioner makes him strong in an area whose importance will only continue to increase as the region continues to diversify.

His Republican challenger, Felix Quayson, has an impressive educational background, and we look forward to seeing what he has to offer in the future. Green Party opponent Laurence Hirsh has a progressive platform and espouses ideas that are positive and reasoned. But neither candidate offers a strong enough case to merit the unseating of a legislator who has been as active and impassioned as Solages.

As Nassau County grapples with tough issues like tax rates, financial stress, disaster preparedness and a new era of suburbia in New York City’s shadow, Solages is the best choice. We encourage voters to re-elect him to a third term.
