Road work rolling along

Princeton Road to be completed by the start of school

While it might not appear so right now, the work under way on Princeton Road is moving ahead on schedule, and is slated to be completed by the time school starts on Tuesday.

The construction is part of the village’s $1.6 million 2009 roadway project, which also encompasses Scott Place, from Woods Avenue to the dead end, and Yorktown Street, from Sunrise Highway to the village line.

The work on Princeton Road, which serves as an exit from South Side High School, extends from the school to Long Beach Road. “Princeton Road is still on schedule,” said Village Engineer Paul Pallas. “We’re not anticipating any major impacts in terms of school opening or anything like that.”

The project involves not only the repaving of streets, but curb replacement and subsurface electrical and water infrastructure improvement. The water mains on Princeton Road and Scott Place will be upgraded from 6- to 8-inch pipes, and electrical systems are being updated as well.

The work, with the exception of Princeton Road, is scheduled to be finished, or at least “substantially complete,” by Oct. 31. “If all that’s left is the final paving, that would be considered substantially complete,” Pallas explained.

He added that all of the work is going according to plans. “The big thing in terms of schedule was the school, and that’s where we focused our attention,” Pallas said. “I actually haven’t even looked at the schedule of [other areas] because I’ve been so focused on the school, but I haven't heard any major complaints or issues in terms of the timing.”

The work, he said, is not only on schedule, but within its budget. Nothing has arisen to bring about an increase in needed materials. “Nothing has come up that's been unusual,” said Pallas.
