92nd Street Live: Nora Ephron in Conversation with Rebecca Traister

The public is invited to a live simulcast program at Temple B'nai Sholom on June 16 to hear a discussions of the future of politics, women's issues and life. Ephron is a best-selling author and Academy Award nominee. Traister is a senior writer for Salon, covering women in politics, media and entertainment. Tickets for this event are $15. Defensive Driving Course at Mercy Medical Center

-- Mercy Medical Center will offer the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course on June 21 and June 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge located across from the entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department. Participants must attend both sessions. Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible for 10 percent off their motor vehicle insurance for three years and/or a reduction of points from their driver’s license. Molloy Institute for Lifelong Learning – Open House

The Molloy Institute for Lifelong Learning (Mill) is sponsoring an open house to attract new members to join an interesting and invigorating program for retirees or people who work part time. Classes are held Tuesdays and/or Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Presentations are delivered by Molloy faculty or professionals from legal, health care, literary, scientific, political and musical arenas. There is an annual fee for this program. Mill is a learning experience for the young in spirit. The open house is on June 22, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Molloy College's Reception Room, Kellenberg Hall. Town of Hempstead's Mobile Town Hall

The town's Mobile Town Hall will be in Rockville Centre on June 26, from 10 a.m. to noon during the Chamber of Commerce's Street Fair. It will be stationed between Sunrise Highway and South Centre Avenue. Residents can apply for passports, safeguard their children with a child identification kit, adopt a pet from the Town Animal Shelter and visit with Councilman Anthony Santino and Town Clerk Mark Bonilla. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a summer mini session, with evening yoga classes. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. Members of the community are invited to participate. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of five classes, beginning on July 5 at 7:30 p.m. and repeating each Tuesday until Aug. 2. Need homework help? Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the. The following art will be featured at your Library throughout the month of June.

Archival Photographs: The Bank of Rockville Centre in the Upper Concourse Gallery. Be sure to take a look at a collection of photographs from the Library archives highlighting The Bank of Rockville Centre.

Gay Pride Month: Coming Out. The display cases of the Rockville Centre Public Library will feature materials relating to Gay Pride Month during June.

Summer Reading T-shirts Through the Years. How many Summer Reading Program T-shirts does your family own? See which of the creative designs from this year and year’s past you remember. This display will run in the Lower Concourse Gallery through the months of June and July.

Photography by Scott Steinke Istanbul: East Meets West. The Helen Kraus Community Room Gallery and the Small Community Room Gallery will feature an exhibition of photographs throughout the month of June. Steinke toured Istanbul, a city influenced by three major Empires –The Byzantine, the Roman and the Ottoman-- in the summer of 2008. When visiting the city when one is awe-struck by the many mosques, churches, palaces, yalis and art from the various empires. From a photographer’s perspective, Istanbul is a spectacular city for capturing a range of images, from the amazing architecture to the cultural array which gives the city an aura of enchantment.

MLK Summer Camp

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is now taking registrations for its annual summer camp program. Boys and girls 4 to 12 years of age participate in a variety of activities Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp runs from July 5 through August 18.

Special Class

The All 4 One yoga class is offered for children with special needs ages 3 to 13 on Saturdays 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. July 9 to 30. Call the Rec office for details.

Tennis Courts open

The Har-Tru courts adjacent to the Rec Center are open and ready for play. Courts are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dusk. Admission is by valid recreation card plus court fees

Aerobic Exercise Classes

Ongoing aerobic exercise classes by Nancy’s Aerobics are being offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings beginning at 7. Classes may be paid for by the session and are conducted in the air conditioned Rec Center gym.

Zumba Classes

The Zumba fitness program with Ruth Karhu is offered Thursdays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. with babysitting available for a fee and Saturdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pay as you go.

Summer Playground and Middle School Programs

The Rec Center's 57th Summer Playground Program will be held from June 29 through Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at three sites: The Rec Center, Wilson Elementary School and Hewitt Elementary School, for children in grades 1 to 6 as of September, 2011. Daily activities include athletics, arts and crafts, recreational games and special events all conducted by trained recreation personnel. $467 per person.

For the 16th summer, the Recreation Department will also host a middle school program at Wilson Elementary School for those in 7th and 8th grades as of September 2011. Daily activities include athletics and games; weekly swimming and bowling trips. $533 per person.

The programs are open to all Rockville Centre residents and those who attend Rockville Centre schools. Non-residents may register at Wilson or Hewitt sites only.

Summer Nursery School

Summer classes begin June 27 and run through August 12. This program is for children entering kindergarten in September 2011 and 2012.

Pre-School Summer Activities

Registration is under way for pre-school summer programs. Both the parent and child must purchase Rec Center membership cards.

A six-session program in creative arts and crafts in different media begins June 28 for ages 3 to 5. The fee is $75. Exploring the Arts is a program in dance, music and art, on Thursdays beginning June 30. For ages 3 to 5. The fee is $75. Computer Tots is a six-week program for children 3-to-5-years-old. Classes are offered for 45 minutes for six weeks beginning either July 5 or July 6. Two sessions each day, either 1:15 to 2 p.m. or 2:05 to 2:50. Call (516) 731-3766 for details. Adventures in Art Camp is a series of week-long programs for children ages 4 and 5. The camp meets from 12:30 to 3 p.m. with a different theme each week. The fee is $150 per week. A parent-toddler workshop in art, music, movement and playtime led by certified early childhood specialist Joan Schapiro for parents or caregivers and their 24- to 36-month-old children begins June 29 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. or July 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. or from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Six sessions for $87. Tumble One, Two and Three, introductory gymnastics classes, for children 18 months to 4-years-old and Introduction to Gymnastics for boys and girls ages 4 and 5 (as of July 1, 2011). The fee is $75 for six 45-minute sessions. Call 678-9339 for details. Happy Piano Jungle Adventure, with stories, games, crafts and rhythm activities for children ages 4 and 5, runs Monday through Friday the week of July 18 to 22 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The fee is $149 for residents.

Youth Summer Programs

Flyers are available and registration is underway for gymnastics and the following programs during the summer 2011: Art Adventure Camp is a series of week-long programs for grades 1 to 5. The camp meets from 12:30 to 4 p.m. with a different theme each week. The fee is $230 per week. Group tennis instruction will be offered on the Nancy Cottrell Memorial Tennis Courts for ages 6 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 28. $75 for five sessions. Mad Science Camp, one-week interactive science activity camps, are offered the weeks of July 5, 11, 18, 25 and August 1, 8 and 15 with a different theme each week. Camps run Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. $230 for each camp. Register online only at www.rvccamps.org.Cartoon-Time classes in cartooning with Dan O’Connor start June 28 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. for ages 8 to 14. The fee is $83 for six sessions plus materials. Computer Explorer classes for kindergarten through grade 4 beginning July 7. $100 for six Thursday afternoon sessions. Call (516) 731-3766 for details. Happy Piano Jungle Adventure, with stories, games, crafts and rhythm activities for 1st and 2nd graders as of September 2010, runs Monday through Friday the week of July 12 to 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. The fee is $135 for residents. Gymnastic workouts featuring floor exercises, balance beam, vaults and uneven bars for boys and girls in kindergarten as of September 2011 are offered Tuesdays from 1 to 1:45 p.m. or Thursdays 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Six sessions for $72 beginning June 29 or July 1. Boys and girls in grades 1 to 8 as of September 2011 are Tuesdays or Thursdays 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning June 29 or July 1. Five sessions for $60. Gymnastics Clinics for grades 6 and up and Team Gymnasts are Tuesday and Thursday 4:45-6:15 p.m. Fee: $16 each clinic; $30 for 2 clinics; $112 for entire series of eight. Begins July 6.

Summer Birthday Parties

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to village residents from ages 2 to 12. Parties are offered Monday through Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday parties beginning at 10 a.m. or 12, 2 or 4 p.m. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center office or call (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

Summer Instructional Sports Schools

Flyers are available for boys baseball, girls basketball, girls and boys lacrosse, and gymnastics schools during the summer 2010.

The 36th annual baseball school is open from June 27 to July 8 (no class July 5) for boys ages 6 to 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Barasch Field. The school is coordinated by Bob Hirschfield of New York Tech and costs $315 for Rockville Centre residents. A basketball camp for girls grades 3 through 10 is offered August 15 to 19 at the Rec Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee $255 per person. Lacrosse camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 17 will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Skelos Sports Complex on Peninsula Boulevard. The boys school runs from July 11 to 14 and the girls school is June 27 to 30. Fee $290 per person. The gymnastics school for girls grades 2 through 9 is offered at the Rec Center July 25 to 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. Fee $175 for five sessions for Rockville Centre residents.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Center Stage spring luncheon and performance. June 22 at noon. After lunch, members of the Center Stage Chorus will perform. $5 per person ($6 at the door).

SPEAKER SERIES

June 7 at 11 a.m. Food Safety. With the summer months approaching, this seminar serves as a reminder of how to keep your food safe in the warm weather. Jennifer Colletti of the Cornell Cooperative Extension will be the guest speaker.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips & programs are scheduled for July and August.
