On Tuesday, the village board recognized a group of Rockville Centre firefighters who worked together to save a man’s life after an accident in April.

First Assistant Chief Brian Cook, Lt. Terrance Curran, Junior Fire Department Capt. Johnny Cook and firefighter Dan Navarino, as well as Megan Jones, a nurse, were honored for helping to save the man, who was injured in a car accident. On April 17 at 9 a.m., the RVCFD got a call reporting an accident at the intersection of Long Beach Road and Lakeview Avenue. Navarino was the first on the scene, and he found Jones doing chest compressions on one of the drivers, who was injured. He took over the life-saving measures from Jones.

When Chief Cook arrived on the scene, he gave the order to cut the man out of the car to continue CPR. His son, Johnny Cook, assisted by preparing an oxygen tank.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated. He is still recovering, but because of the actions of the Fire Department members and Jones, he is alive.

Also at the meeting were Harry and Peter Kurrus, the victim’s sons.
