In response to the extreme heat this week, the Village of Rockville Centre, in conjunction with the Nassau County Dept. of Emergency Management, opened a cooling center for the public on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Sandel Senior Center, 50 S. Park Ave. until 9 p.m. each evening.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and certified emergency response team volunteers visited the center Tuesday.

Using its reverse notification call system, the village also asked residents to turn off all unnecessary lighting, appliances and electronic equipment and to reduce their use of water and air conditioning until after 10 p.m. to conserve energy during the heat wave, the worst in a decade, which is expected to last through Thursday.
