BOE VP will not seek re-election

Posted

Two residents of the Rockville Centre School district will be on the ballot, seeking election for two seats on the Board of Education in the upcoming board and budget vote. The pair is Mayda Kramer, co-PTA president of South Side High School who is running for the seat currently held by school board Vice President Stephen Kriss who is not seeking re-election, and incumbent Gregg Spaulding, who will seek a full term as trustee, after filling the seat vacated by Board of Education Vice President Kathy Horace in January 2010.

At the Rockville Centre Public library, incumbent William S. Murray Jr., no relation to other Murrays in the public arena, is seeking a full third term and is running unopposed.

The annual vote will take place on May 17 in the gym of South Side High School between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Mayda Kramer

BOE candidate

Mayda Kramer has been a resident of the Village of Rockville Centre for 17 years and a resident of the Rockville Centre school district since 2000. She has two children — a senior set to graduate from South Side High School in June, and a 9th grader. Since entering the school district, and in her former school district (Oceanside), Kramer, 51, has been very involved in the PTA and other school activities.

Kramer’s PTA responsibilities have included the Arts In Motion Committee and numerous various fundraising activities, including the Hewitt Fair, aid for victims of Katrina, the 911 Fund and the Middle School fundraiser, among others. She has chaired the 5th Grade Activities Committee, participated in the Curriculum Committee and has served as treasurer and now as co-president of the South Side High School PTA. In fulfilling these roles, Kramer has had the opportunity to be involved in advocating for children in the school district, whether that included assisting in Drug & Alcohol Task Force programs or bringing literacy programs into the classroom. She has always believed that it is important to support the efforts of the school district in order to ensure that its students are provided with the best possible education and the right tools to succeed when they complete their schooling.

Kramer says she decided to run for the Board of Education to fulfill her desire to see that the Rockville Centre school district continues to pursue its vision of providing a quality education to all the children of the district. A strong educational foundation will guarantee that they will be the leaders of tomorrow. Kramer hopes to promote community involvement in the pursuit of quality education while being mindful of individual financial constraints. She will bring more than 20 years of accounting and financial experience to the board, having worked in the field of forensic accounting for the last eight years.

Gregg Spaulding

BOE incumbent

Gregg Spaulding, a Rockville Centre native, attended Wilson Elementary School, South Side Middle School and South Side High School. He later attended Nassau Community College and Long Island University at the C.W. Post campus.

Spaulding, 49, who is a fire communications technician for Nassau County, has been an active volunteer in Rockville Centre for more than 30 years as a member of its Auxiliary Police since 1978 and its Fire Department since 1990. He served as the Commanding Officer of the Auxiliary Police for almost 20 years, and is a highly decorated officer with numerous Meritorious Service Awards and letters of appreciation for his many years of service.

The former co-president of the Covert Elementary School PTA, Spaulding coaches Sports Night with the Nassau County Police Athletic League and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoys digital photography, graphic design and ancestral genealogy. He and his wife of 17 years, Linda, have four children, two at Covert and two at South Side Middle School.
