A Sayville resident was struck by a taxi in Long Beach late last Saturday night and is in critical condition after sustaining “severe” injuries, city officials said.

According to Long Beach Fire Department Chief Richard Corbett, a 22-year-old male, who was not identified, was hit by a taxi at Lindell Boulevard and West Park Avenue around 11 p.m. last Saturday, and sustained severe injuries.

“He had a fractured leg, internal bleeding and he had a head injury,” Corbett said. “He had head trauma and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition. He went right into surgery when he got there.”

Corbett said the man was transported via a Long Beach fire department ambulance with two paramedics on board, and was provided with a police escort by Long Beach and Nassau County police.

Deputy Inspector Bruce Meyer confirmed the report, but noted he was unaware of the identity of the man involved in the accident.

“A pedestrian was crossing the street in the middle of a block and was struck by a taxi cab,” he said. “[The cab] was traveling westbound on West Park Avenue — the male was crossing the street northbound when he was struck.”

Nassau University Medical Center representatives did not return calls for comment. Asked about the condition of the driver, Meyer said that the vehicle was removed and taken to the city’s garage for a safety inspection, and that “no alcohol was involved” in the incident.

“The driver wasn’t arrested — there wasn’t a DWI,” Meyer said, noting that as more details become available, detectives will continue to investigate the matter. “They’re investigating this very carefully.”
