South High Cultural Society wows

The Henry Waldinger Library closed a little later on April 16 for a multi-cultural celebration hosted by the South High School Cultural Society.

A 4 p.m., when the library usually shuts down for the weekend, the fair began with more than 70 children and their parents attending. Children got to decorate Easter eggs, make maracas out of paper plates, and create Chinese paper lanterns.

Students from South’s Cultural Society taught the children a Filipino stick dance — Tinikiling — which involves two people hitting bamboo poles in a beat sequence on the ground with one of more dancers. Kids also got to take part in a Chinese circle game.

Cultural Society members performed a variety of routines including Merengue and Bollywood dances. The Chinese Ribbon dance drew a lot of “oohs and aahs” from the crowd, noted Library Director Mamie Eng.

The multi-cultural fair allowed the South High School students to show their talents to a much broader audience, Eng said. She hopes to make this an annual event at the library.
