South Side remains unbeaten

Each of the seven girls’ soccer teams in Conference I earned at least one win in the season’s first half, but only South Side got through it undefeated.

The Lady Cyclones held off Farmingdale, 2-1, at Skelos Sports Complex last Friday to up their winning streak to five games and maintain the top spot in Nassau’s best conference. Senior Carly Beyar and junior Dana Rosney scored in the first and second half, respectively, and a defense led by seniors Jackie Nicholas, Emma Kriss and Emily Slome kept the relentless Lady Dalers from getting the equalizer.

“They pressured us,” South Side coach Judi Croutier said. “It’s Conference I and you never know what’s going to happen. Every team is talented and every game is up for grabs.”

Beyar got the Lady Cyclones (5-0-1) on the board 5:19 into the game when she surprised Farmingdale goalkeeper Kristie Summus with an unassisted blast from 25 yards out. It was a perfectly placed shot just under the crossbar, and was Beyar’s third goal in two games and fourth overall to go along with a few assists.
If not for Summus, the margin could’ve been two or three goals at the half. She twice stopped senior Crystal Dunn from point-blank range, including a diving save on the doorstep at the 14-minute mark. Dunn, who missed all but three games in 2008 playing for the United States U-17 national team, has three goals and three assists so far and is happy to be around all the time.

“It’s nice being home and seeing all my friends,” said Dunn, an All-Long Island selection in 2007 who is headed to the University of North Carolina. “It’s my last year and hopefully we’ll do really well and go as far as we can.”

The teams traded goals in a 62-second span midway through the second half. South Side junior Dana Rosney continued her torrid scoring pace when she took a pass from sophomore Caitlin Wallace, made a nifty move in the box and beat Summus with a low shot in the corner with 20:45 remaining. It was Rosney’s team-leading fifth goal. “Dana has great skills and a nose for the goal,” Croutier said.
