Police have identified the victims of an automobile accident in Salisbury early Thursday morning that resulted in one death and one person seriously injured.

According to detectives, at 2 a.m., a black 1994 Honda Accord traveling northbound on Carman Avenue crossed over the southbound lanes and struck a tree in front of a property just before the intersection with Lake Lane.

Police said the driver, Fred Barraza, 33, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. The passenger, Jose Valdevenito, 35, of Westbury, was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center with serious head trauma, police said. According to a hospital spokeswoman, Valdevenito was in the Intensive Care Unit on Friday and listed in critical but stable condition.

Police listed Barraza as a Williston Park resident, though records show his residence in Salisbury.

According to friends of the victim, Barraza was an officer for the New York Police Department. He played football at W.T. Clarke High School and in college at C.W. Post, friends said.

The investigation is continuing.
