Local readers talk about women they admire

Dorothy Goosby, Town of Hempstead councilwoman:

“This may seem like an insignificant way to start my conversation with Harriet Tubman, but I would begin by telling her that she shares a birthday with my husband, Jay. After that, I would feel composed enough to tell her how much I have admire her strength, her tenacity and her raw intelligence as denoted in her escape from slavery, her 13 missions to rescue more than 70 slaves, using the underground railroad, and her later work to promote women’s suffrage.”

Liz Tortorella, East Rockaway:

“If I was able to have a coffee clutch with a famous women who has made a change in our lives, I would invite activist Gloria Steinem. Born in 1934, Steinem was a feminist and editor. She founded Ms. Magazine and is a best-selling author and spokesperson on women issues.  She was a very prominent activist during the 2nd wave of feminism, and she continued for several decades. She still writes and speaks about societal roles, politics and issues effecting all women.”

Sharon Hurkens, Pastor, East Rockaway Church of the Nazarene:

“In October 20th, 1933 in a tiny shack made of tin and stone, little Anne was born. At first they lay her aside leaving her for dead, then suddenly a little gargle and cry came from the heap of clothes lying off to the side. She was not dead but very much alive. This is the beginning of the life of the most amazing woman I have ever known — my mother. Her life was difficult as her father was an alcoholic and her mother died when she was only nine years old. Even though she had obstacles to overcome throughout her life, I can never remember her ever being anything other than positive with an attitude of “Joy comes in the morning” and “Every cloud has a silver lining.” She is the most amazing testimony of a woman walking by faith and in the plan that God had for her. She married James Thomson at the young age of 16 and together their life was nothing short of one miracle after another. Today she is lying in a hospital bed and we thought that the end of her amazing journey had come, but God has given Anne another chance at life, He is not done with her yet. If ever there is a woman after whom I want to model my attitude, it is my mother, Anne Thomson.”
