ZigZag Quartet
The innovative chamber group brings its contemporary take on classical sounds to the Hofstra stage. This unique ensemble, formed in 2006, with members Francisco Roldán (guitar), Alexander A. Wu (piano), Hilliard Greene (double bass), and Danny Mallon (percussion) zigzags through countries, time periods and dance styles: from flamenco, early bossa novas, modern Argentine tangos and Caribbean dances to the jazz classics, world traditions and commissioned works written for the quartet. In addition, a mix of solos, duos and trios will showcase the artistry of each instrumentalist.
Saturday, May 12, 8 p.m. $17, $15 seniors and students. Hofstra University’s Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Ave., South Campus, Hempstead. (516) 463-6644.

Attacca Quartet

Another young, exciting chamber ensemble, the Attacca Quartet, visits the area this weekend with their dynamic, passionate musical style. Since forming at the Juilliard School in 2003, the internationally acclaimed quartet – featuring violinists Amy Schroeder and Keiko Tokunaga, violist Luke Fleming and cellist Andrew Yee – has become one of America’s premier young performing ensembles. Their concert will include selections from Haydn, Dvorak and Beethoven.
Saturday, May 12, 8 p.m. $20. Freeport High School, 50 S. Brookside Ave., Freeport. (516) 223-7659 or www.freeportconcertassociation.com.
