The New York Mets might have opened up their inaugural season in 1962, but for Valley Stream residents, a bigger opening took place that same year as the Valley Stream Public Library moved to its new building on the Village Green after operating for years on Rockaway Avenue.

Fifty years ago, the Valley Stream Public Library was in a small two-story building on Rockaway Avenue, its days numbered in the village’s downtown. A few blocks away, a brand new library was to be constructed behind Village Hall.

When the Valley Stream Public Library first opened, the priority was shelf space for books, Mamie Eng, the current director, said, and in 1962 the building was more than adequate. Perhaps, if someone had been able to see 50 years into the future, it would have included some meeting space.

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library provided the chalk and the children provided the imagination last Saturday as about 75 children turned the sidewalk between the library and Village Hall into their personal canvas.
