Two Valley Stream convenience stores were robbed by a man with a “large knife” over the weekend, according to Nassau County police. The details of the robberies, at a 7-Eleven on North Central Avenue early Saturday morning and a Valero gas station on Sunrise Highway last night, fit the pattern of similar crimes reported in and near the village since February.

A man entered the 7-Eleven, at 190 N. Central Ave., at 3:40 a.m. on Saturday and approached a 60-year-old male clerk, according to police. The suspect brandished a knife and told the clerk to open the register. The clerk complied, and the suspect removed cash and grabbed cigarettes and scratch-off lottery tickets before he fled north on Central Avenue.

No injuries were reported. The clerk was the only person in the store during the robbery.

On Sunday, a man entered the Valero gas station at 8:20 p.m., brandished a knife and told the male clerk, who was alone in the store, to open the register, police said. The clerk opened the register and the suspect took cash as well as “numerous boxes of Newport cigarettes," according to police. The suspect fled east on Sunrise Highway, then south on Bismark Avenue, police said.

The clerk was not injured.

A Nassau County police spokeswoman said that the Valero robbery was being investigated as connected to similar crimes in the area in recent months, but said she could not confirm that the 7-Eleven robbery was.

The descriptions provided by police in each incident were similar, with the suspect in Friday’s robbery described as a black man, 5 feet 8 with a thin build and wearing black gloves, a dark scarf around his face and a gray hooded sweatshirt with the word “Victory” on the back.

The suspect in the Valero robbery was described as a black man between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 with a medium build and wearing a black jacket over a blue hooded sweatshirt, black gloves and a scarf around his face.

Police asked that anyone with information regarding either incident call (800) 244-TIPS.
