300 take part in Spartan 5K

The third annual Spartan 5K Run for MS was held on March 17, at Valley Stream North High School in Franklin Square. The course began at the high school and continued through the local neighborhood.

Nearly $3,000 was raised this year by the event, which helps to fund multiple sclerosis research through the MS Society of America. Nearly 300 local residents participated, topping last year’s turnout by close to 50.

Gift baskets that were donated by local merchants were raffled off during the event, which was organized by teachers Michael Frazer and Anne Schroeder, as well as several student groups.

“This run shows the community how we can all come together and help a terrific cause,” said John Friia, a 2010 graduate of VSN, who helped organize the event. “And the reason that we do it is because a lot of people in the community have MS, or know someone else who has it.”
