Symbolism in the monument

The 15-foot, 2,350-pound steel beam is among the larger relics recovered from the site of the World Trade Center.

The foundation supports on which the beam rests are emblematic of the Twin Towers.

The beam is positioned to point directly toward the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan.

The base is in the shape of a pentagon to honor those who lost their lives in the nation’s capital on Sept. 11, 2001.

The bronze number “93” at the base of the monument honors those
who were killed on hijacked Flight 93 which crashed in Shanksville, Pa.
