A jaunt around a very safe town

Posted

Third-graders from the Willow Road School were all smiles at Safety Town in East Meadow on Nov. 12 and 13.

Located at Eisenhower Park, the pint-sized town was designed in 1964 as an interactive way to teach and promote early childhood safety. The town is scaled down for the kids to experience the components of a typical neighborhood, and includes traffic lights, paved streets, buildings and simulated railroad crossings.

Dressed in their new class trip T-shirts provided by the school’s Parent Teacher Association, students also saw a demonstration on traffic and bicycle safety presented by the Nassau County Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. They walked, rode bicycles and drove mini-vehicles while practicing the safety precautions and procedures they learned.
