A new tree at Wheeler Avenue

Wheeler Avenue School celebrated Earth Day with the planting a new tree Thursday morning.

Student council members read poems and messages about the importance of trees, and discussed the important of conservation. "We're helping the environment by planting on tree that will help the Earth," said fifth-grader Nick Reyes.

The tree is a Sawleaf Zelkova and was planted in the back of the school property about 20 minutes before the Earth Day ceremony. It is a round shade tree from Asia that will grow 50 to 60 feet high. In the fall, leaves turn red, orange or yellow before falling.

It was provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension for the "Greening of Nassau" program. Wheeler Avenue School Principal Christine Zerillo said the spot had the perfect southwest exposure for a new tree.
