WHAT:

It's a traumatic time for so many post-Sandy. Each story is worst than the next. Experts within the field of trauma will present "After the Storm: Psychological First Aid in Response to Hurricane Sandy." Psychological First Aid is an approach developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and the National Center for PTSD for responders in the immediate days to weeks after a disaster. More than 250 are registered for this popular free workshop (created a wait list to accommodate a future program) designed for both new and seasoned mental health/health professionals providing care to help with the emotional impact as people come to terms and restore lives in the aftermath of the storm. The full-day is provided by the Adelphi University School of Social Work and the Institute for Parenting. Increased demand upon the health care system can be expected after a disaster and the University wants to do its part to provide the necessary tools for mental health/health professionals to deliver quality and evidence-based trauma treatment.

Participants from mental health agencies, parenting centers, school systems, private practitioners, addiction agencies, nursing home staff, hospital staff, colleges, and government agencies will be in attendance. Health and mental health professionals are on the front line of responding to the emergent needs of people in disasters and emergencies. People affected by the storm will present with a host of needs ranging from concrete services, to psychological comforting, trauma counseling and grief work. Other people will respond to trauma with physical signs and symptoms of stress. Clinicians and health care providers who are often the healers have also experienced the same crisis. This workshop will provide a venue for them to express their own concerns and receive support from colleagues.
