All’s fair as school celebrates fall

Posted

It was a celebration of fall last week at Shaw Avenue School. There were a variety of activities to celebrate the season, culminating with a carnival on Friday.

Principal Angela Hudson said all of the events were designed so that every student in the school would be included. There was a door decorating contest in which children could put seasonal lingo on their classroom door including adjectives, riddles, jokes and word problems with a fall or harvest theme.

There was a scavenger hunt with pictures of fall items from A to Z hung up around the building. Each class had to compile a list of the 26 items plus where the pictures were found. At estimation stations on Thursday, students had to guess how much a large pumpkin weighed and how many candy corn were in a jar. Hudson said there were winners at each grade level.

Children were asked to wear fall colors to school on Thursday and Friday. On Friday morning, there was a story teller who created the scenes on the children’s faces using professional acting makeup.

Each child got to spend about 45 minutes at the carnival on Friday which featured bounces, slides, cotton candy and games. “Every student in the school was able to take home a prize,” Hudson said.
