Another snowstorm socks Valley Stream

Posted

Snow weary drivers woke up Monday to yet another winter snowstorm, which has slowed traffic throughout the morning commute.

The snow, which started overnight, has shut down all Valley Stream school districts. It is the second snow day the schools have used this year. The Central High School District has also canceled its evening adult education classes, as well as a junior college night presentation.

District 24 Superintendent Dr. Edward Fale said that the decision to close schools was made about 5:30 a.m. Although the snow had barely started to fall by then, the four superintendents were concerned about the conditions when schools would be letting out.

Mayor Ed Fare said that the snow plows hit the streets as soon as Public Works employees started their Monday morning shifts. “As soon as the crews came in, they went out right away.”

Fare said that initial forecasts called for only a few inches of snow. He said having schools closed helped because it reduced traffic on the roads so the plows could do their jobs.

With the third major snowstorm of the year, Fare said it is likely will village will spend its entire snow removal budget. The village is well stocked with sand and salt, he added.

The village board's work session has been postponed to Tuesday night.

Another batch of winter weather is expected to move in Tuesday night, with a day of rain likely on Wednesday.
