At District 24, students celebrate Women’s History Month

In honor of Women’s History Month, students at Valley Stream district 24 schools learned about and explored the significant contributions made by women who left their mark in history.

At Buck Elementary School, students crafted paper dolls of renowned women and learned their respective biography and accomplishments. The dolls were then put on the Women’s HERstory Month display inside the school.

At Robert W. Carbonaro, students learned about important women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) including scientist Eugenie Clark, famously called the “The Shark Lady” for her groundbreaking study of sharks and discovery of new fish species.

Students also read The Shark Lady by Jess Keating based on the life of the pioneering scientist, took a live-streamed tour of an aquarium, and even used virtual reality goggles to explore the ocean depths. Students especially enjoyed the virtual experience of coming “face-to-face” with sharks just as Eugenie Clark had done many times throughout her career, according to a press release.

Students at Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School researched influential women leaders by using the Pixton application. Pixton is an interactive platform for creating comic book storyboards using avatars, backgrounds, texts, and themes that can be shared within the classrooms. The students drafted questions and conducted research in their Media Center, then created storyboards with their avatars to conduct “live interviews” with the inspiring women of their choice.
