Both lanes of traffic on Sunrise Highway were closed on Wednesday morning after a vehicle struck a bicyclist in the intersection at Long Beach Road.
A 32-year-old man driving a 2003 Ford was heading east on Sunrise Highway when he struck a 37-year-old man, who was traveling south on Long Beach Road, Nassau detectives said.
Nassau County and Rockville Centre police arrived at the scene. The bicyclist suffered head and body trauma, police said, and was listed in critical condition. The driver had no injuries.
The collision occurred at about 11:20 a.m., according to village spokeswoman Julie Scully, and the bicyclist was transported to an area hospital.
The westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway were reopened, according to a news release sent by Nassau County police at 12:50 p.m. By 4:20 p.m., both lanes were open.
Nassau’s First Squad and the Rockville Centre Police Department are investigating the accident.
