Buck Student Council helps the hungry

Posted

Entering the lobby of the William L. Buck School, the smell of peanut butter wafted through the air. On May 24, Student Council members were hard at work slathering peanut butter and jelly on bread, and then wrapping the finished product in tin foil.

Advisors Christine Iadevaio and Joseph Mangini, along with 32 students, prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the INN Soup Kitchen in Hempstead. “In addition to helping the needy and the hungry, another goal of the Student Council for this task was to beat the previous record of 350 sandwiches,” Iadevaio said.

As the groups of students manned tables, armed with peanut butter, jelly and loaves of bread, the countdown began. Mangini would scoop up the finished product into boxes. After only one hour, the job was complete. “The grand total is 411 — a new record!” he exclaimed to the group.

“We thank all the parents for the donations of peanut butter, jelly and tin foil,” Iadevaio said. “Our lollipop fundraiser bought the 35 loaves of bread.”

Student Council President Maham Ayaz summed up the day. “Every sandwich makes a difference,” she said.
