Church to launch new program for seniors

Committee is looking for community input and assistance

There’s a new program for senior citizens in the works in Valley Stream, and its organizers are looking for any help or input as they design it.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church could be hosting The Senior Program of Activities, Refreshment and Knowledge, or SPARK, by the end of the year, according to Carol Russer, junior warden of the vestry at the church. The program would be held in the Parish Hall, but renovations to its bathroom need to be finished to make it handicap accessible.

The program will focus on keeping seniors connected to others and engaged in activities that will help keep their minds sharp, Russer said.

“Keeping minds and bodies active as a way of keeping fit is commonly known to prevent mental decline as we age,” Russer said. “This is supported by research, and it is good to remember that our seniors remain a vital resource of wisdom and perspective for our community to boot.”

The program would start at two days per week but could expand up to five. It would feature “activities and learning opportunities” that would be tailored to participants’ interests, and lunch may be provided, though Russer said details would be finalized based on input from the community. The activities would change as participants’ needs and interests change, she added. She noted that they would also have opportunities to interact with the children who attend the church’s adjacent nursery school, including performances by the children.

“The interaction with children should be especially welcome for those seniors whose families live far away,” Russer said.

No fee has been set, but Russer said it would be “nominal.”

The program is being geared toward retirees, but there would be no minimum age requirement. It may appeal to early retirees, or anyone with free time who wants to make new friends or get out more. Health care aids could accompany participants. It would be open to interested residents of any local community.

The church has a committee working to set up the program, but Russer said assistance would be welcome from community members who have any skills, knowledge or input to contribute. She said the committee is looking for grants that could help fund SPARK, and would appreciate any advise or guidance from knowledgeable community members.

Anyone interested in learning more or in helping to set up the program can call the parish office at (516) 825-2903 and leave their contact information.
