Fire company donates to Wounded Warriors

Members of the Valley Stream Fire Department, specifically those who belong to Rescue Company No. 1, are well versed in helping people. Recently, they stepped up to aid the men and women who have served their nation.

On Jan. 30, members of the company presented a $3,000 check to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization which aids servicemen and women who were hurt in combat.

Gary Ferrucci, past fire chief and current lieutenant of the Rescue Company, helped organize the collection. In December, Rescue Company members stood along Sunrise Highway near the Green Acres Mall with boots to get donations. In just four hours, they raised about $2,500.

In June, the company also took part in First Responder Education Day through County Executive Ed Mangano’s office, and it raised another $500 through a 50/50 raffle. The donations were combined and presented to the Nassau County Firefighters Wounded Warrior Project, which will ensure that the money will be used to help local residents.

“We’ll be doing it again,” Ferrucci said. “It definitely will be an annual project.”
