District 30 installs electronic signs

District 30 celebrated new electronic signs installed at each of its three schools with ribbon cutting ceremonies on Nov. 18. Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages secured a $100,000 state grant for the equipment.

“With this grant, we are taking the right step forward in relieving the high tax burden on parents, as well as securing a better and brighter future for the students,” Solages said. “These digital signs will help connect the surrounding communities, in addition to conveying information to students, faculty and visitors.”

The Forest Road School Parent Teacher Association contacted Solages’s office about updating the exterior signs, an idea that the district supported in hopes of improving its communication with the community.

The previous signs required that information be updated manually, which was limiting in terms of space and efficiency, explained Clear Stream Avenue School Principal John Singleton. The new signs use a wireless transmitter that allows district and building administrators to update them remotely. The LED screens allow for displays of simple images and up to five lines of text, with graphics and colors to attract attention.

“The children and the parents are excited to see the new graphics,” Singleton said. “This month, a turkey is displayed in full color to remind us to be thankful for this sign that has already made a difference in how the children view themselves and their school.”
