Amy Pernick, the assistant principal at Shaw Avenue School for the past five years, has been selected as the new principal, according to a letter from District 30 Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Stirling posted on the district's website on Tuesday.

She replaces Johane Ligonde, who left the position after two years to become principal of Freeport Middle School. Pernick has worked in the district for 19 years. She taught third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades before being promoted to assistant principal in 2008.

Shaw Avenue is the largest elementary school in Valley Stream with about 700 students.

The new assistant principal will be Josh McPherson, who currently holds the same position at a school in Flushing, Queens. Pernick and McPherson were both officially ppointed to their new positions by the Board of Education on Thursday night.
