Doesn’t want Waldbaums to close

Posted

To the Editor:

My wife and I are very upset with the announcement that the Valley Stream Waldbaums store will be closing in April. We have shopped in that store for more than 25 years. It has been our favorite store. I want you to know that closing that location is a terrible mistake. If you think that customers will continue to shop at other Waldbaums locations (such as Rockville Centre), you are mistaken. There are other stores in our area which are acceptable substitutes for Waldbaums (King Kullen, Key Food, Associated and Cross Island). Most people will not be traveling long distances to buy groceries.

Many of the customers that shop in the Valley Stream store come from the west (from neighborhoods in Queens) or the area immediately adjacent. These shoppers who already travel won’t go to Garden City, Howard Beach or Rockville Centre. Waldbaums will simply lose those customers.

The store can’t be failing for lack of business. It’s a busy store. We shop at all different times, and there are always shoppers. Perhaps the store is mismanaged (although we have always found it to have excellent customer service) or there is something wrong with pricing policies or inventory management.

We hope Waldbaums will seriously rethink this closure.
