Plum – a resale boutique
85 Elderd Lane
Cedarhurst
(718) 327-4483

Behind the purple sign and the boutique feel of Plum, a resale shop that opened in May, is a purpose. All profits go to several charities with programs designed to help both children and adults.

One program is a learning center for special education children. By bringing together educators, therapists, administrators and parents, it focuses on the special learning concerns of children.

The vocational program is a curriculum choice for high school students who excel in technical skills, offering them professional training in a trade, while including the regular studies. Hands-on courses include contracting, plumbing, woodworking, electrical training, air-conditioning, graphics and automotive skills.

In light of the difficult financial climate, with so many people needing to reinvent themselves for employment, this vocational program has been extended to adults, through evening courses. Courses cover real estate, insurance, bookkeeping, culinary, phlebotomy, plumbing, computer skills and more. Graduates receive certificates and help with job placement.

Everything sold at Plum has been donated. Plum’s focus is on upscale merchandise that’s gently used, basically in great condition. Sold are women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, giftware, furniture and household accessories, such as fixtures, mirrors, artwork, lamps, etc. Other than eligible furniture, which can be picked up by appointment, anything can be dropped off at the store. Donators will receive a receipt they can use for a tax deduction.

Plum is very much a boutique. The 1,600 square-foot shop has a purple décor, with jazz playing in the background. People have been donating wonderful items, such as upscale apparel, vintage clothing and designer handbags and shoes. At the moment they have a complete, brand new line of high-end fashion jewelry that was also donated. In the works is their web site (www.resale.com), which shows some of the many items currently for sale: a Miu Miu jeweled belt, a Hermes silk scarf, a Dolce and Gabbana men’s suit, Prada snakeskin women’s pumps, and even a Patricia Underwood horsehair hat.

In addition to supporting a worthwhile cause, Plum’s concept allows those with unneeded luxury items to make them available to people who could not normally afford them, particularly during these trying economic times.
