Falcons must overcome inexperience

Nassau County’s conference alignment for boys’ soccer has changed from ability grouping to enrollment-based, but the goal for Valley Stream South remains the same.

“We’re looking to make the playoffs,” said coach Rich Boyd, “but we’ll have to overcome our inexperience and a pretty tough schedule.”

The Falcons, who lost five starters as well as their assistant coach from a team that finished 4-9-1 overall and lost to Hewlett in overtime in the first round of the Class A playoffs, were placed in Conference VI with Lynbrook, Great Neck North, Glen Cove, Bethpage, Manhasset and West Hempstead. The top four teams will qualify for the playoffs.

“Change always makes things interesting,” Boyd said. “I’ve only known ability grouping in the 15 years I’ve been involved with boys’ soccer. Over the past five years we’ve seen a lot of parity, so we’ll see if it continues.”

South’s roster boasts a strong junior flavor – 13 to be exact. Ryan Flynn, Brandon Negron and Jack Haanraadts were the only returning seniors at practice opening week as the team prepared for the Carle Place Tournament and this Friday’s non-league game at Baldwin.

Flynn, an All-Conference selection a year ago, plays a vital role from the center-midfield position. He brings quality speed, tenacity and work ethic. “He’s all over the field,” Boyd said. “We’re depending on him to control the middle and provide leadership.”

Negron was battling a knee injury in early September, but if healthy the strong-footed forward will be counted on to put the ball in the net. “We expect him to score some goals,” Boyd said. “If he’s on the field, he’s going to be a big asset.”

Haanraadts is moving to sweeper after spending last season in the midfield. He joins a defense that includes junior fullback Jon Hernandez and junior stopper Stanley Egbuchulum. “We’re looking for Jack to help lead the defense, which will hopefully be one of our strong points,” Boyd said. “He’s got a nose for the ball and a good feel for the game.”
