A home in the east end of Valley Stream was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. About 100 firefighters from three departments battled the blaze whilch heavily damaged the two-story house.
Valley Stream firefighters were called to 127 Cornwell Avenue, at the corner of East Carpenter Street, at about 8:50 p.m. on Jan. 28. Flames were blowing out the front door and second-story windows as the first units arrived on scene.
Assistance was provided at the scene by the Hewlett and Malverne fire departments which Elmont, Woodmere and Lawrence-Cedarhurst providing standby coverage. The fire was reported under control in about 35 minutes.
One fiefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. No other injuries were reported. A family including two children escaped the blaze. The cause was determined to be accidental, from a cardbox box left on the stove in the ground-floor kitchen.
